The Waukesha County Medical Society invites you to the 2023 Annual Meeting. This event features a social, dinner and annual report to the members. Plan to join colleagues, meet new members and enjoy a relaxing evening on Lake Okauchee. The event will also feature a presentation from guest speaker, Dr Michelle Graham.
Dr Graham is the Chief Executive Officer, United Healthcare Medicare and Retirement Wisconsin and Michigan and also serves on the Wisconsin Medical Society Board of Directors. She tells a fascinating story of moving from clinical medicine to hospital administration to insurance administration. She is an interesting and engaging speaker who shares some of the inner workings of the insurance side of health care, including UHC’s recent decision to eliminate about 20% of their prior authorization requirements.

Michelle L. Graham, MD, MME, FAAFP serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan for UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare & Retirement line of business. Dr. Graham began her career at UHC as a Market Medical Director for both the Commercial and Medicare business, followed by promotions to Chief Medical Officer and more recently the Regional Chief Medical Officer for Medicare & Retirement covering the eastern half of the country. Prior to her career at UnitedHealthcare, she served as the Vice President of Medical Affairs for legacy Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Ascension, where she championed quality/LEAN/utilization, medical staff affairs, enterprise inpatient EMR – EPIC implementation, and system physician leadership development and mentoring programs. She currently serves as a District 1 Co-Chair and Director on the Board of the Wisconsin Medical Society, as well as serving on the finance and membership committees. Michelle also served as the President of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County and the President of the Medical Society of Milwaukee Foundation. She has also served on the Advisory Council for Feeding America – Feeding Wisconsin and the WHIO, WCHQ, and National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin Boards of Directors. She was recently named as the 2020 physician of the year winner of the Dr. Erastus B. Wolcott Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Society as being “Eminent in his/her profession. A lover of humanity. Who delights to serve.”
Michelle hails from Iowa and earned a Magna Cum Laude Bachelor of Arts degree from Simpson College. She earned both her MD degree and Master in Medical Education from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and completed her family practice residency at the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation, a community-based University of Iowa program. She is board certified in Family Medicine. She pursued additional education at UCSF and practiced as an HIV specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine and graduated from Creighton University with advanced obstetrical training in fertility. Dr. Graham has served on the clinical faculty at the University of Iowa as the Assistant Director for the Waterloo, Iowa – based University of Iowa Family Medicine Residency, the Northeast Iowa Medical Education Foundation. Dr. Graham has extensive medico-legal experience, serving as an expert witness throughout her academic career. She has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and graduated as the University of Iowa Family Medicine Student of the Year. She has also been certified in LEAN Healthcare by the University of Michigan.
Dr. Graham is passionate for population health, quality improvement, medical education, and providing care for the underserved. She has spoken internationally for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Christian Medical and Dental Society. She has taught internationally in Togo, Africa, in collaboration with the Peace Corps. Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Graham has served as a medical missionary in Mexico and Peru, as well as leading medical mission trips to Honduras for many years. She has championed work with Mr. Bob’s Under the Bridge and Habitat for Humanity in the greater Milwaukee area to combat homelessness.
